Why you should keep WordPress, or any CMS up-to-date.

Sometimes it seems like hard-work to update your website and keep on top of your plugins. But we wanted to take you through the main reasons to take the time to keep everything updated. We chose to highlight WordPress as one of the most popular content management systems, there isn’t anything particularly special about it and everyone should work to keep their CMS updated – whatever they have.

Compatibility with new things

The internet changes rapidly and in order to keep up developers of plugins, themes and CMS need to change at the same time. Browsers, as an example, will drop old technologies. The recent ditching of Adobe Flash player by major players Mozilla and Google is a great example of this.

New features

WordPress has been great recently at updating their CMS with new and exciting features, their new Gutenberg editor is a great example of this. Making editing your website easier is an obvious no-brainer here and something you should totally get on board with.

Security of your system

The single most important reason to keep everything updated is security. Pure and simple. Most coding languages have vulnerabilities, PHP and WordPress is such a well known CMS that their vulnerabilities show up more often than others. So it’s always good to make sure your website has the most up-to-date system.

Are there problems with updating my website?

Potentially, if the update goes wrong you could lose your entire website. Although this shouldn’t deter you and you should always follow a strict checklist when you update your website:

  1. Do I have the most recent backup of everything?
  2. Do all of the plugins work with the latest version?
  3. Does my web host support the latest version?
  4. Do I know how to roll back if it goes wrong?
