Are you ready for Gutenberg?

Soon Automattic will release a brand new version of WordPress, along with some minor improvements to the system this new version will include one major update: Gutenberg.

What is Gutenberg?

Gutenberg is the brand new editor from WordPress and will take over from the current WYSIWYG editor and it brings a raft of new features. It also brings with it a completely new way to create and edit content which makes life quicker and easier.  We also think it’s pretty great that they’ve named it after the father of modern printing!

Blocks, blocks, and more blocks.

Gutenberg runs slightly differently to the current editor in WordPress because of its new editor system. The block system adds a bit more flexibility to creating content, with a selection of new blocks which we can imagine will only be added too as the system grows – more flexibility than you can get from a WYSIWYG editor.

In fact, all of our posts have been built in the Gutenberg editor since we launched our new website.

Is there a large learning curve?

With any new technology, there is a learning curve but Gutenberg we have found is incredibly easy to use and extremely quick to learn. The block structure makes easy to pick the right elements and even with our custom theme, we’ve found that most of the blocks seem to work perfectly. Each block has a settings section on the right-hand side, which are incredibly clear and easy to use.

What does the future hold for Gutenberg?

We think the future is bright for Gutenberg, the block system enables a future of potentials such as third-party blocks, or new blocks from WordPress and more enhancements and improvements to the system.

It’s also fluid enough for WordPress is update the CMS around it, bringing the outdated external layout (the menu and admin bar) into the modern era of design. We certainly think it needs the update anyway (sorry WordPress creators!).

Worried? Here’s what to do:

You can find out more information about Gutenberg on the official WordPress website and try out some of the awesome new features. You can also download the plugin from the WordPress plugin directory.

Which makes it baffling when I work with a small business who doesn’t quite see the value in the internet, just yet.
