Q&A with Ingri:Dahl!

Posted in Creative, Features, Ingri:Dahl

When I started blogging, I liked the idea that I would be giving my opinion on items, like clothes, logos, tv shows and even businesses, I am a well opinionated person and to have a way to really bring that across was something I really liked the idea of. Please keep in mind that blogging for me, was always something I’ve wanted to do to improve my writing skills as well, as I was bullied I didn’t really have the ability to improve on skills learnt in Junior school, so I’ve always tried things a new way.

Back to the point of this post, it didn’t occur to me that no sooner had I started blogging I met two amazing ladies, Kine and Einy on Twitter who had embarked to bring style to 3D glasses, quite successfully, this meeting by chance was great and I got myself some of their glasses to review, it was my first review so could have been better. But the friendship grew and today I bring you a Q&A session with them.

The amazing pair of creators have made some brilliant models. I wanted to find out where it started and where this incredible branding image came from.

Why start Ingri:Dahl 3D?
We started INGRI:DAHL, because we wanted to change the world of 3D glasses. Since we were very young we wanted to start our company, but wasn’t sure how. When we starting talking about 3D glasses, it became clear to us that we should design our own. The idea was also to decrease the plastic waste that occurs when everyone gets a cheaper pair and throws them away. Our designs are meant for long lasting relationships between owner and the pair.

How did you come up with “Ingri:Dahl” as a name?
INGRI:DAHL fuses the names of two Scandinavian icons. “INGRI” refers to Oscar-winning actress Ingrid Bergman, star of “Casablanca.” “DAHL” honors Roald Dahl, author of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and other children’s classics. Both have left a legacy in entertainment and been an influence to people, including us.

I notice the huge part of your brand is the “:D” Where did the idea come from?
We wanted to incorporate the “:D”, because it shows that we are a fun company. We also liked how the “:” could represent the eyes/glasses.

It is very interesting how they have built their brand and I really do love their logo, especially how it is featured on their glasses.  Breaking away from the branding, I went into how they create their models, where they start with it.

When it comes to designing new models where do you start? – How do you come up with the initial design?
All our designs are inspired by Classic Hollywood movies and icons. So we look at pictures from this time, watch movies and brainstorm. From there it is just revision, revision and revision.

Now onto the final stage of the interview to find out more about their company as a whole, the future of Ingri:Dahl, funding the future and  how they are planning to expand.

When you started Ingri:Dahl, did you realise it would become such a hit?

We started INGRI:DAHL as a side project, while still in school. We never expected it to become a full time job!

The best kickstarter video I’ve seen!

You have just done a kickstarter and got a huge about of funding, why kickstarter and did you realise it would become such a marketing wonder?
When we needed more funding for our Spring Collection, we were advised by many fellow entrepreneurs to launch our company on Kickstarter, so we did. The response was truly amazing. Through Kickstarter, we were able to raise awareness about INGRI:DAHL 3D glasses and fund our Spring Collection, but we also met so many great people!

Something that has always made me wonder is, why start a company with your sister?
Not only are we sisters, but we are twins! We wouldn’t have it any other way.

I really love the glasses you gave me, Popcron model, what other models have you got planned? (Don’t give away too many secrets now!)
We already launched Sodapop and Candy, and we’re launching two more models very very soon.

Are you looking to go into retail stores? I’ve seen you going into a couple of online stores, but anything in the UK or away from Norway and the USA?

We’re in talks with stores in the UK, so hopefully you will be able to find our 3D glasses there pretty soon :)

I must point out at this point I threw a curveball in and they couldn’t think of how to answer it. About how they would change the past!

How big are the plans for the future of your company?
We are expanding our portfolio by offering sunglasses too soon.

Any tips for anyone looking to start up?
Be prepared for hard work and for things to cost more and take more time than you initially expect.

Finally, honestly, how much do you two fight?
Hahaha, sometimes – we are sisters after all.
